'This book brings ancient foods into the modern kitchen. Every page is full of fascination. A walk in the bush will never be the same.' Bruce Pascoe
We know more about pine nuts than bunya nuts, kale than warrigal greens, but there's an edible pantry of unique flavours that First Nations people have been making the most of long before anyone came up with the word 'foodie'.
Welcome to a food-lover's guidebook to the First Foods of this continent. Including an informative guide to more than 60 of the most accessible Indigenous ingredients, including their flavour profiles, along with tips for how to buy, grow and store them.
After that, 100 delicious recipes: all featuring native ingredients, and including tips for substituting regular pantry ingredients where needed - including Bush-Tomato Cheese on Toast, Anise Myrtle and Macadamia Poached Chicken, Myrtle Tea Cake, Quandong and Davidson's Plum Iced Vovos and more. Plus features and recipes for an Indigenous medicine garden, as well as how to set up your pantry and freezer, and the best places to find native ingredients in shops and online.

Great product!
Beautiful art and quality, keen on hanging it on the wall!

Gorgeous local artworks, clothing, swimsuits and homewares, at a lovely beach shack. Support local artists and designers by buying your beachwear and souvenirs at the Starfish Studio.
Gorgeous fabric, oversized and stunning colour. Highly recommended.

incredible business & owner! i had such an amazing experience in store & online with Jess
Beautiful, elegant and unique. Loved the Straddie art and pictures. Friendly helpful owner/staff.
If I could give 6 stars I would. Jess is the most creative artist and sells her unique designs/homewares in her shop and online. SERIOUSLY never drive past her shop. If I could move in there I would. There are always mood boards on the go. The quality is excellent but the creativity will have all your friends asking “where did you get that from ? “
What a delight to discover this studio and shop displaying wonderful designs by the owner and artist, Jess. You will find unique designs using sea themes and native plants on fabrics, cushion covers, tea towels and t’shirts for all the family. Jess also sources jewellery, tableware, paintings and other objet d’arts from select artists and designers. Wonderful treasures to be found here for everyone.
I really love the products from this shop. It stocks an array of quality homewares and clothing that reflect the natural beauty of laid-back North Stradbroke Island: its beaches and abundant marine life. Tee-shirts are made with Fairtrade certified cotton and sourced from Fairtrade producers, which is another plus for me. Starfish at Straddie - great service, designs, ethos and of course, a great beach getaway destination.
Unique and beautiful home wares inspired by island life. Exceptional quality goods and service always with a smile. Highly recommend.
The quality of the T Shirts is great, lush fabric, cool prints, and a long tale, long lasting after being thrashed on the beach and around the pool. Get on it! - (ex Wife kept the cushion covers.) :-)
Have slowly purchased a range of products from the studio - t-shirts, coral lights and a beautiful pile of outdoor cushions. Amazing quality material (outdoor fabric in Qld sun doesn’t usually last well - T-shirt material is soft but strong), stunning designs and excellent constriction. One of my favourite designers and stores, customer service is A1. Thank you!!!!
Love my Coral Lamp! I always buy gifts for friends from this store, original and great quality. Highly recommend!
